Ontonagon
County's current economy has been dominated
by three large sectors: copper mining and
processing, paper product production, and
the fabrication of metal components. With
the announced closing of active copper
mining the county economy is looking at
diversifying its economic base through high
tech industries, and an increase in the
small businesses that support a growing
tourism industry. The tourism industry is
currently built around snowmobiling and the
skiing, hiking, and wilderness camping
facilities found in the Porcupine Mountains
State Park, the Ottawa National Forest, and
a large selection of other recreation sites.
While forest products and tourism will
continue to provide an economic base,
non-forest related manufacturing, high tech
industry and service sectors will have an
opportunity to emerge for an active economic
development recruitment program. Ontonagon
County has an excellent reputation assisting
new and existing businesses and offers a
substantial revolving-loan fund as well as
tax abatement for job creation business
development.
Over 300 acres of Ontonagon County has been
reserved in two different locations to serve
as Renaissance Zones. By 2007, 3 companies
have taken advantage of the tax-free
incentives that these areas offer. The
Village of Ontonagon has also designated
this Renaissance Zone as an Industrial
Development District, which has additional
tax incentives available.
