Bordering
Wisconsin, Gogebic County is Michigan's most
northwestern county. Its more recent economy
is built around the sectors that focus on
forest-based recreation such as hunting,
fishing, snowmobiling and Nordic skiing,
along with the harvesting of trees for
conversion into traditional solid wood
products and wood fiber for paper pulp. A
majority of the county is within the
boundaries of the Ottawa National Forest.
The county, because of its topography and
proximity to Lake Superior, support a major
Midwest ski resort industry and a growing
Indian gaming facility. A third significant
economic activity is non-forest related
manufacturing, which includes such
industries as precision tools, plastic
injection molding and industrial sewing.
Over 1500 acres of Gogebic County has been
reserved in five different locations to
serve as Renaissance Zones. By 2007, 10
companies have taken advantage of the
tax-free incentives that these areas offer.
